December School Holidays 2026: The Year-End Break
The year-end holidays are the longest break of the school year: Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December 2026, about six weeks, with the new school year starting on Monday 4 January 2027. For most children it is a long rest; for those starting Primary 1 in January, it is also the runway to day one.

What the year-end break is
Term 4 ends on Friday, 20 November 2026, and the year-end holidays run from Saturday, 21 November to Thursday, 31 December, roughly six weeks. The 2027 school year then begins on Monday, 4 January 2027. In 2027 the same break runs from Saturday, 20 November to Friday, 31 December. Every year's dates are on the school holidays hub.
It is the longest break on the calendar, longer than the four-week June holidays, and the only one that ends one school year and begins another. That is what makes it feel different from the rest.
Two very different Decembers
Which December you are having depends on one thing: whether your child is already in school, or about to start it.
For current pupils
Rest first, then mix the weeks
Six weeks is long enough to spread things out: a camp or a swim intensive early on, generous outdoor and nature time, regular visits to the public libraries, and a family trip if you are going away. Sport Singapore's ActiveSG runs holiday sport programmes through the break. Leave real stretches unscheduled; unstructured play is part of the point of the long break.
For the incoming P1 cohort
The transition December
If your child starts Primary 1 in January 2027, this break doubles as the preparation window: when to leave K2 childcare, whether to travel, and whether to bridge into student care early. That is a bigger question than one card can hold, so we built a separate guide for it. Read the December before P1 for the full walk-through, and school readiness for what to practise before day one.
For working parents
Six weeks is a long stretch of care to cover when school is out, and it is worth arranging early rather than in November.
- Student care keeps running. School-based student care centres generally operate through the school holidays, usually switching to a holiday programme of outings and activities in place of the after-school routine. Hours and any extra sign-up vary by centre, so confirm the December schedule directly with yours. Our student care guide explains how these centres work and how fees are structured.
- Holiday programmes fill the gaps. Sports camps, swim intensives and library programmes all run through the year-end break and can anchor the weeks when student care or family leave does not cover the full day.
- Incoming P1 families, decide on December care now. If you will need care from the first day of P1, line up student care before the break, and if you want your child to settle into the centre early, ask whether they accept December starts. The December before P1 covers this bridging question in full.
Common questions
When does the new school year start? +
The 2027 school year begins on Monday, 4 January 2027, shared by MOE Kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. In 2026 the pattern was staggered, with P1 starting one weekday before the older levels; whether 2027 staggers again is set by MOE's annual announcement, so check the school holidays hub and your school's own communication.
Is student care open through the December break? +
School-based student care centres generally keep running through the school holidays, usually with a holiday programme in place of the after-school routine, but hours and arrangements vary by centre. If your child is starting P1 in January, note that not every centre takes children before P1 formally begins, and a December fee usually still applies, so confirm both directly. Our student care guide covers enrolment, and the December before P1 walks through the bridging option in detail.
Should we use December to prep academics for next year? +
For a child already in primary school, the year-end break is mainly for rest; light reading and everyday conversation do more than worksheets. For a child about to start P1, the everyday routines matter far more than any academic head start: earlier bedtimes, packing a bag, managing small tasks alone. Our school readiness guide covers what actually helps before day one.
When is primary school orientation? +
Orientation timing is set by each school and typically falls somewhere between November and the start of January, with many schools holding it in late December or the days just before term starts. Your school will write to you with its date. Our orientation and first day guide covers what to expect and what to bring.
