Phase 2A: Parent or Sibling Is a Former Student
Your child may register in Phase 2A if either parent or a sibling is a former student of the primary school. Joining the school's alumni association is not required to create this eligibility.
Last reviewed against official sources: 16 July 2026
On this page, “alumni eligibility” means a parent or sibling who previously studied at the school. It does not mean alumni-association membership gives a separate or higher priority. Independent parent-run guide, not affiliated with MOE or any school; the P1 Registration Portal is the final word on your child’s eligible phases and schools.

30-second eligibility check
A quick guide for the former-student route. The P1 Registration Portal is the actual record of your child’s eligible phases and schools.
1. Did either parent study at this primary school?
This checker is general guidance. The eligible phases and schools shown in the MOE P1 Registration Portal are the record that counts.
Who qualifies through the former-student route
The most common mix-up is the last row: a sibling currently at the school is Phase 1, not Phase 2A.
Confirm your child’s eligible phases and schools in the P1 Registration Portal.
Do I need to join the alumni association?
No. Alumni-association membership is not required to qualify as a former student. Phase 2A covers children whose parent or sibling is a former student of the school. This includes former students who joined the alumni association, but association membership is no longer a separate, earlier registration phase.
If you remember separate Phase 2A1 and Phase 2A2 categories, those were combined into one Phase 2A from the 2022 registration exercise. All eligible Phase 2A groups now register within the same phase, and membership does not create a higher-priority group.
If your former school was renamed, merged or closed
Former students of a school that later merged may be eligible for the merged (successor) school, with documents certifying former-student status. If your school changed name or moved, you register for the present-day school.
Because this depends on the specific merger, do not assume every historical connection carries over. You may be eligible for the successor school — confirm the school shown in the P1 Registration Portal, or contact the current school before you register.
A tool to look up your former school’s present-day successor, with its distance and Phase 2A history, is on the way.
What proof of former-student status might be required?
The portal may already recognise some relationships. Where proof is requested, the school or portal may ask for records showing that the parent or sibling attended the school. Follow the exact document instructions shown in the portal or given by the school — do not rely on any single document being accepted everywhere.
A useful preparation checklist:
- The parent’s and child’s identification details.
- The former school’s name, including the name it had at the time of attendance.
- The approximate years the parent or sibling attended.
- Any available school records (report books, certificates, transfer records).
- Documents linking the registering child to the former-student sibling, where required.
- Merger or successor-school information, where applicable.
If you cannot locate the records, contact the school before the phase closes.
Phase 2A eligibility does not guarantee a place
Your former-student connection lets you apply during Phase 2A. It does not guarantee admission and does not remove the effect of citizenship and home-school distance. When applicants exceed places, MOE applies priority in this order:
- 1. Singapore Citizen within 1km
- 2. Singapore Citizen 1km to 2km
- 3. Singapore Citizen beyond 2km
- 4. Permanent Resident within 1km
- 5. Permanent Resident 1km to 2km
- 6. Permanent Resident beyond 2km
Alumni-association membership does not move a child ahead of another applicant within the same citizenship-and-distance group.
Check the school’s Phase 2A history
Whether your connection is worth using depends on how competitive the school’s Phase 2A actually is. Open the school’s page for its year-by-year Phase 2A vacancies, applicants and which group had to ballot, or see every school’s current figures on the live page.
Should you use your Phase 2A connection?
Being eligible does not automatically make the former school the best choice. Weigh it against:
- Home-school distance and travelling time (distance also decides priority if the school ballots).
- The school’s recent Phase 2A vacancies and applicants, and its past balloting.
- Other schools you could reach in a later phase.
Remember you may register for only one school in a phase. Applying to your former school does not reserve a place in another school, and MOE takes the latest application submitted during that phase.
How to register in Phase 2A
- Log in to the P1 Registration Portal with Singpass.
- Confirm that Phase 2A and the relevant school are displayed for your child.
- Check the school’s current vacancies and applicants.
- Select one school only.
- Upload supporting documents if the portal requests them.
- Submit before the phase closes.
- Confirm the portal shows “Registration submitted”.
- Check the result from 8am on the result-announcement date.
Only one parent needs to register, but the registering parent must declare that the other parent’s consent has been obtained.
The portal does not show my former school
- 1. Check whether the school now has a different name.
- 2. Check whether it merged with another school.
- 3. Have the other parent log in with their Singpass.
- 4. Confirm the parent’s or sibling’s personal details match official records.
- 5. Use the portal’s online form if neither parent can see the expected eligibility.
- 6. Contact the school during registration operating hours.
After the result
If successful: the place is secured. Follow the school’s instructions and watch Parents Gateway for orientation and administrative information.
If unsuccessful: register in the next phase for which your child is eligible, and reassess nearby schools and remaining vacancies. An unsuccessful Phase 2A application does not carry forward automatically.
Common questions
Must I join the alumni association to qualify? +
No. Phase 2A covers a child whose parent or sibling is a former student of the school. Joining the alumni association is not required to create this eligibility.
Does alumni-association membership give extra priority? +
No. Membership does not move a child ahead of another applicant within the same citizenship-and-distance group. The eligibility comes from being a former student, not from membership.
I studied at the secondary section of a full school. Does that count for the primary school? +
Phase 2A here is about being a former student of the primary school of choice. If your school has a primary and secondary section, confirm with the school and check what the P1 Registration Portal shows for your child before you rely on it.
My older child has already graduated from the school. Does the sibling connection still count? +
A former-student sibling can qualify for Phase 2A even after graduating. Prepare proof of the sibling relationship and of the sibling's study at the school if requested.
Does a half-sibling or a sibling from a previous marriage count? +
Sibling relationships can be recognised, but the exact documents needed vary by case. Follow the document instructions in the portal or from the school, and contact the school if you are unsure.
My school changed its name. Which school do I select? +
Select the present-day school. If you are unsure which current school your former school became, confirm the successor school in the P1 Registration Portal or contact the current school before registering.
My former school merged with another. Am I eligible for the merged school? +
Former students of a school that later merged may be eligible for the merged school, with documents certifying former-student status. Confirm the successor school and eligibility in the portal or with the school — do not assume it carries over automatically.
What if I cannot find my report book or school records? +
The portal may already recognise some relationships. If proof is requested and you cannot locate records, contact the school before the phase closes and follow the exact instructions given.
Why is the school missing from my child's eligible list in the portal? +
Try the other parent's Singpass login, check the school's current name, and confirm the parent's or sibling's details match official records. If it still does not appear, use the portal's online form when instructed, or contact the school.
Does living outside 2km affect my Phase 2A application? +
Yes. Phase 2A can ballot, and when applicants exceed places, priority follows citizenship first, then home-school distance (within 1km, then 1 to 2km, then beyond 2km). A former-student connection does not remove the effect of distance.
Can I apply to two former schools in the same phase? +
No. You may register for only one school in a phase. Applying to your former school does not reserve a place anywhere else.
Can I withdraw and choose another school before Phase 2A closes? +
MOE takes the latest application submitted during the phase. Check the current portal rules and timings before changing your choice, and make any change before the phase closes.
What happens if Phase 2A balloting is unsuccessful? +
You can register again in the next phase for which your child is eligible. An unsuccessful Phase 2A application does not carry forward automatically, so reassess nearby schools and remaining vacancies.
Is a former kindergarten, secondary school or junior college connection enough? +
This route is about being a former student of the primary school of choice. A child from the school's MOE Kindergarten is a separate Phase 2A route. For other connections, check what the portal shows and confirm with the school.
